In 1983, Andy Warhol created a series of ten color silkscreens depicting endangered animals from around the world: the Siberian tiger, the San Francisco tiger, the orangutan, the Grevy's zebra, the black rhinoceros, the bighorn ram, the African elephant, the Pine Barrens tree frog, the giant panda, and the bald eagle. Using the bright colors - characteristic of his signature style - and poignant expressions that evoke the animal's fate, Warhol creates a dynamic tension between art and reality.
The Endangered Species Portfolio was commissioned by Ronald and Frayda Feldman, longtime environmental and political activists who support innovative art projects and installations through their gallery, Ronald Feldman Fine Art, New York.
